The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a perfect choice for work or off-road adventure. While it offers a manual transmission that few other mid-size pickups can match, its four-cylinder and V-6 engines are not particularly powerful nor is its six-speed automatic very refined. But in those scenarios where capability is paramount, the Tacoma shines – thanks to its flexible suspension and tough frame that make it completely ready for whatever the mud and trail throw at it. Plus, Toyota’s renowned reliability makes the decision easier still.
With the exception of the brakes, which feel grabby and can lead to nosedives in hard stops, the Toyota Tacoma steers and handles smoothly. The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine produces 159 horsepower. The SR5 and SR4 trims come standard with this engine, which lacks meaningful power. You’ll likely prefer the 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is available in the first two trims and standard in every other.
A four-cylinder Tacoma gets up to 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, which is below average for a compact pickup truck. A V6 engine gets up to 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
Every Tacoma comes with touchscreen infotainment. The base model features a 7.0-inch screen, while all other trim levels come with 8.0-inch screens. Additionally, the company has now added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, which should improve the user experience over the previous infotainment system.
