It’s easy to see why small crossover SUVs are so popular among car shoppers. Despite the fact that most of these SUVs are useful, they don’t evoke a lot of passion for their driver, but they surely offer convenience, safety, utility, and versatility without being overly expensive. The Mazda CX-5, however, stands out as a notable exception.
It’s a good used vehicle, but the Mazda’s appeal doesn’t end with its athleticism. It has peppy engines, a comfortable ride, and a first-rate cabin. The car also gets good fuel economy estimates, and it has plenty of room for passengers in both rows. It has few glaring weaknesses other than being a bit stingy with cargo space.
The base nonturbo CX-5 is strong enough for daily driving. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower engine isn’t exciting, but it’s capable, and it pairs well with the six-speed automatic transmission. For something more energetic, go with the turbocharged engine.
The CX-5 comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen that sits on top of the dash like a floating tablet. The interface is straightforward and intuitive, thanks to a rotary control mounted between the front seats. Unfortunately, the screen’s size and menu design is inferior to current rivals. Entry-level models aren’t compatible with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
