It is true that the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox is a good compact SUV. Although it doesn’t excel in any one area, it is a great SUV. There are roomy seats for five, but some interior materials are lacking, and cargo volume is only average. The base engine gets good fuel economy, but acceleration is subpar. A muscular powertrain is available, but it is less efficient.
The 2021 Equinox comes standard with a 170-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. While this powertrain is adequate for everyday driving, its lackluster acceleration may wear you out. A bright spot is the standard six-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly. The gearing, however, is designed to maximize fuel efficiency, so it can slam the gas pedal hard before it downshifts.
With a base engine and standard front-wheel drive, the Equinox returns 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for a compact SUV. With all-wheel drive, you get 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway when you pair the base engine with it.
It offers straightforward operation, a simple menu structure, and sharp graphics. The rest of the center stack has clearly marked buttons and knobs for adjusting the audio volume and temperature.
