The Electric Shift: Is BYD Poised to Outsell Tesla in 2024? (PDF)

The Changing Currents of the EV Market

Picture this: a world where the whir of electric motors drowns out the rumble of combustion engines, a world swiftly turning into reality. As we cruise through the bustling streets of 2024, two automotive titans, Tesla and BYD, are vying for supremacy in this electric utopia.

Tesla, long hailed as the maverick of the EV market under the charismatic leadership of Elon Musk, now finds a formidable challenger in BYD – a company once known only to enthusiasts and investors, including Warren Buffett.

The BYD Surge: Affordable Innovation Meets Market Demand

BYD’s approach to winning the EV race is markedly different from Tesla’s. While Tesla has captivated the premium market with models ranging from $40,000 to $100,000, BYD has cast a wider net. Its strategy? Affordability coupled with innovation.

The BYD Seagull, priced at a mere $10,000, is not just a car; it’s a statement – EVs for everyone. This has not only expanded BYD’s customer base but has also been pivotal in cultivating a new generation of EV drivers in China, the world’s biggest EV market.

China’s EV Ecosystem: A Catalyst for BYD’s Ascent

China’s dominance in the EV sector is no secret. With 64% of the global EV production, the country has created an ecosystem that fuels companies like BYD. From controlling critical battery supply chains to aggressively expanding charging networks, China has laid the groundwork for BYD’s rise. This home-ground advantage has enabled BYD to not only dominate domestically but also to set its sights on global EV leadership.

Tesla’s Challenge: Innovation vs. Accessibility

Tesla’s journey has been about groundbreaking innovation and luxury, but this approach has its limits. As Seth Goldstein, a Morningstar equity strategist, points out, Tesla’s stronghold remains strong, yet to keep pace, it must consider venturing into more affordable models. This is where BYD’s strategy shines, offering a diverse range of vehicles that cater to a broader market segment.

The Global Race: Infrastructure, Strategy, and Future Prospects

While BYD leads in China, Tesla has been the face of EVs globally. However, with BYD’s expansion strategies and China’s robust EV infrastructure – which includes the world’s largest network of high-powered chargers – the scales might tip in 2024.

Additionally, Beijing’s recent move to end its 11-year-old EV subsidy scheme, without denting sales, signals market maturity and consumer readiness for EVs, further bolstering BYD’s position.

Conclusion: An Electrifying Future Awaits

As we witness this thrilling race between BYD and Tesla, one thing is clear – the future of transportation is electric, and it’s closer than ever. BYD’s rise is not just a challenge to Tesla; it’s a testament to the changing dynamics of the automotive world.

As 2024 approaches, we’re left to ponder: will this be the year BYD rewrites the rules of the EV market? What do you think will be the next big leap in this electric shift?

The post The Electric Shift: Is BYD Poised to Outsell Tesla in 2024? first appeared on Diminished Value Carolina.

After years of delays, the Tesla Cybertruck is finally nearing production. The manufacturer announced on July 15 that the first Cybertruck had been built at its Giga Texas facility. This is a significant milestone, but it’s important to note that full-volume production is not expected until 2024.

What Caused the Delays?

There have been several factors that have contributed to the delays in Cybertruck production. One factor is the ongoing chip shortage, which has affected the production of many vehicles. Another factor is the complexity of the Cybertruck’s design. The Cybertruck’s unique body style requires new manufacturing techniques, which Tesla is still developing.

Despite the delays, Tesla is still committed to producing the Cybertruck. The company has taken several steps to ensure that production goes smoothly, including building a new factory in Austin, Texas, specifically for the Cybertruck.

In the meantime, Tesla is continuing to test the Cybertruck. The company has been spotted testing prototypes on public roads, and it has also begun delivering pre-production models to some customers.

While the Cybertruck’s production has been delayed, it’s clear that Tesla is making progress. The company is confident that it will be able to start full-volume production in 2024.

Pricing Expected to Change

When the Cybertruck was first announced, Tesla said that it would start at $39,900 for the base model. However, the starting price will likely be higher than that when the truck goes into production. This is because the cost of materials and manufacturing has increased since the Cybertruck was first announced.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has hinted that the Cybertruck’s starting price could be closer to $50,000. He has also said that the truck’s range could be lower than originally planned.

It’s still too early to say for sure what the final price of the Cybertruck will be. However, the truck will be more expensive than originally planned.

The Tesla Cybertruck is finally nearing production, but it’s not clear when the truck will be available to the general public. Full-volume production is not expected until 2024, and the starting price could be higher than originally planned. However, Tesla is confident that the Cybertruck will be a successful vehicle.

Tesla, the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is gearing up to reveal its latest quarterly delivery figures, which have become a significant focal point for investors. With Tesla shares already surging by 109% this year, the number of cars delivered in the last quarter will serve as a crucial indicator of the company’s market performance and the effectiveness of its pricing strategy. As competition intensifies in the EV space, especially in China, Tesla faces the challenge of maintaining its dominance while striving to meet ambitious production targets.

Tesla’s Pricing Strategy and Market Position

To protect its market share from rival automakers offering newer models, Tesla implemented a comprehensive pricing strategy by reducing prices across its model lineup. This move aimed to counteract the impact of rising interest rates and inflation, which had begun to affect consumer purchasing power.

While Tesla remains the foremost EV manufacturer in the United States, it faces stiff competition in China from BYD Co., whose refreshed lineup and global ambitions have catapulted it ahead. However, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, acknowledged the competitive edge of BYD’s vehicles and acknowledged their progress since their initial encounter in 2011.

Anticipated Delivery Figures and Production Goals

Industry analysts predict that Tesla will report sales of approximately 448,350 vehicles in the last quarter, representing a 6% increase compared to the previous quarter. Despite maintaining its position as the top global battery-electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla will need to accelerate its sales pace to achieve its target of producing 1.8 to 2 million vehicles this year.

In 2022, Tesla delivered over 1.3 million vehicles worldwide, showcasing its dominant presence in the EV market. However, the company’s focus on expanding manufacturing facilities outside Berlin and in Texas has resulted in production outpacing deliveries, a trend likely to continue in the second quarter of this year.

Impact of Price Adjustments and Incentives

Tesla’s strategic pricing adjustments have made its vehicles more affordable, capturing the attention of potential buyers. The popular Model Y, for instance, now starts at $47,740 in the US, compared to $65,990 at the beginning of the year. Furthermore, Tesla’s eligibility for the full $7,500 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act has significantly benefited the sales of its high-volume vehicles, such as the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV. To further entice buyers and clear inventory, the company even offered three months of free fast charging in the US. However, these incentives also imply that Tesla may need to continue implementing price cuts in the future to remain competitive.

Analyst Outlook and Market Response

While some analysts remain optimistic about Tesla’s prospects, foreseeing the potential for continued growth and sales expansion, others caution about potential price cuts and revisions to future estimates. Recent market enthusiasm surrounding Tesla’s dominant charging network, especially after securing partnerships with automakers like Ford Motor Co., has contributed to a 40% surge in Tesla’s shares. However, this surge has led to a few analysts downgrading the stock, emphasizing the need for a balanced assessment of Tesla’s near-term fundamentals and future growth potential.

As Tesla prepares to disclose its quarterly delivery figures, investors and industry observers eagerly await the results. The EV giant faces both opportunities and challenges, navigating intense competition while striving to meet ambitious production targets. Tesla’s pricing strategy, coupled with its dominance in the US charging network, will play a crucial role in shaping its market position. With the EV industry constantly evolving, Tesla’s ability to adapt and innovate will determine its success in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

The post Tesla’s Forecasted Quarter of Remarkable Deliveries first appeared on Diminished Value Carolina.

The US is showing a growing inclination to replace traditional automobiles powered by gasoline with electric vehicles, both new and used. A recent report from CarMax, a retailer of pre-owned cars, revealed that the search volume for EVs has doubled in the past year. This upsurge can be attributed to the country-wide hike in fuel costs. More impressively, more car shoppers are following through on their searches and switching over to previously owned EVs while ditching their gasoline cars in the process. Interestingly, CarMax uncovered that Toyotas are most often traded for electric vehicles, which is surprising considering the reticence of the automaker to wholly adopt electric engines.

CarMax recently investigated the behaviors of car buyers transitioning from fuel-powered models to electric vehicles. Analyzing various brands and types, the study discovered SUVs held the largest portion of exchanges, making up 40%; sedans and coupes represented 29%, and luxury cars ranked third at 17%. This survey underscores the rising popularity of EVs, as consumers gradually weigh up green transportation alternatives.

With more SUVs on the road than sedans and coupes, it is logical that SUVs are the most frequently traded-in vehicles for EVs. SUVs aren’t dominating the top five EV models and the Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling EV according to CarMax.

EV sedans and crossovers seem to be replacing SUVs among buyers. Since the Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling EV, it’s reasonable to assume that some former SUV drivers are now opting for it since it is the best-selling EV. It could indicate that sedans, which were previously believed to be on the decline, have a brighter future.

Because of this, buyers are switching from SUVs to electric sedans and crossovers. Although the exact proportion of SUV owners who switch to the Tesla Model 3 is unknown, it is likely that some SUV drivers have switched to the Tesla, indicating a positive outlook for the supposedly “doomed” sedan.

Honda Civics were most frequently traded in for Tesla Model 3s, followed by Toyota Tacoma, according to the CarMax study. Although the report does not provide information on the number of Prius Primes traded in, the Toyota Prius was the most commonly traded-in vehicle for Nissan Leaf purchases at CarMax.

Toyota was the most commonly traded-in brand for EVs, accounting for 12% of ICE-to-EV transactions. Ford and BMW came in second and third, respectively, each representing 8%, with Honda rounding out the top three at 7%.

How Tesla is Revolutionizing the Car Battery Industry (PDF)

Electric cars have become a staple in the transportation industry, and the demand for them is growing. With that growth comes the demand for electric car batteries. Until recently, most of these batteries have been made in China, putting automakers at risk of supply chain disruptions due to geopolitical tensions. But Tesla is changing the game with its new cylindrical 4680 battery cells, which are set to upend the industry hierarchy.

Electric car batteries have typically been fashioned as flat pouches or rectangular boxes in the name of space efficiency. Cylindrical cells, compared to these, have historically posed challenges due to the wasted space created when they are stacked together. Tesla is now lessening this issue with its new 4680 cylindrical battery cells – which measure 46mm in diameter and 80mm in length – promising up to five times the energy of existing Tesla car batteries.

Besides providing more energy, these new cells are also more affordable to produce. They use a new material that uses aluminum, a relatively plentiful and low-cost metal, as well as fewer raw materials. By using upgraded technology, batteries are made with fewer parts, making them lighter and easier to mass-produce, since they do not have to be tailored to fit different car designs.

The timing for Tesla’s new batteries is opportune. The US President’s Inflation Reduction Act has raised the stakes for electric car makers that use Chinese battery suppliers. The electric car would qualify for subsidies and a sales boost from the thousands of dollars in tax credits for US buyers if it used batteries made at Tesla’s Austin and Nevada plants.

Recently, Tesla has ramped up battery production in the US. In addition to its plan of vertical integration, it has ordered $2.9 billion of battery materials from South Korea’s L&F. That means more affordable batteries and higher margins. It is unfortunate for companies such as Panasonic and LG Energy Solution that have heavily bet on Tesla’s continued use of their battery technology and production lines.

Electric cars had a significant boost in sales volumes globally, and the increased demand for batteries has caused a shortage of manufacturing capacity. However, Tesla’s battery cell production saw more than 1,000 cars completed per week in December and it is currently expanding its Nevada plant to make 100 gigawatt-hours of 4680 cells annually, adequate for 2 million electric cars. As output grows and costs reduce, Tesla’s suppliers face a hardship trying to keep up with their low operating margins below 5%.

Moreover, the ability of Tesla to manufacture its own batteries significantly contributes to its operational resilience. It also permits Tesla to upgrade and modify its models faster, while avoiding supply disruptions. The small group of businesses that dominate the world’s batteries now face the same type of disruption Tesla has brought to the world of electric cars. The future of the industry looks bright, and Tesla is leading the way.

The post How Tesla is Revolutionizing the Car Battery Industry first appeared on Diminished Value Carolina.

Maintenance Differences Between Gas and Electric Cars (PDF)

As electric vehicles are mechanically simpler and more electronic, they need less routine maintenance than gas-powered vehicles. However, drivers should still be aware of nuances in EV maintenance.

You’ll see a lot of differences if you drive an electric vehicle versus a gas-powered vehicle when you take it to the shop. Tesla advertises its vehicles as eliminating the need for service, claiming they eliminated oil changes and other common gas-drivetrain maintenance responsibilities forever.

Due to their technical complexity, EVs do have some maintenance and service nuances. EVs might be maintained by over-the-air software updates. However, if an EV needs to be repaired, it could take much longer. Their batteries are also complex, and replacing them might be costly.

Keeping an electric vehicle on the road differs from driving a gas-powered vehicle in the following ways:

Maintenance Costs

Over the course of five years, EVs require less maintenance, with an average cost of $4,246 compared to $4,583 for gas-powered cars, according to a Kelley Blue Book assessment.

Car Fluids

A gas-powered vehicle’s engine oil and oil filter should be changed every few thousand miles, according to automakers. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, do not have engine oil since they are powered by electric motors, so you don’t need to worry about changing it. They also have fewer moving parts than regular cars.

Besides engine oil, there are plenty of other fluids in traditional internal combustion engines to monitor. EVs are essentially fluid-free, but they have some nuances. For example, Tesla’s transmission has a more simple design that requires infrequent filter changes. Door hinges still need to be lubricated, and brake and window washer fluids are also still needed.

As EVs only require electricity, owners don’t need to worry about fuel additives, and compounds added to gas tanks to clean engine parts.

Technology

The EV is leading the charge as vehicles become more electronic and technologically advanced. With EVs, software updates and infotainment updates are handled via over-the-air upgrades, though automakers are still figuring out how to do that. They’re essentially computers on wheels.

Tesla can unlock additional performance from an owner’s vehicle via over-the-air software updates. Polestar and Audi have also explored this concept. EV owners usually pay for performance upgrades.

Battery Maintenance

Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric cars have a potentially higher cost for battery replacement. While it’s still early days for the EV transition and regular battery replacements can be expensive (some estimates suggest as much as $15,000), new EV drivers needn’t worry because of this.

In general, EV battery replacements are referred to once an older electric car enters the used market. Therefore, the battery’s health and state of charge are important metrics to determine if a second or third owner should expect a costly battery replacement.

Breaks

EVs benefit from regenerative braking, which means the pads and rotors need to be changed less often while, typically, owners of gasoline-powered cars change their pads and rotors every 20,000 to 50,000 miles.

Repair Cost

EV repairs may require unique tools and equipment, electronics such as sensors can be expensive, and there are fewer technicians specializing in EV repair right now. Kelley Blue Book estimates that over the course of five years, electric vehicles will incur repair costs of approximately $1,712, up from $1,695 for gas-powered vehicles.

Similarities

For both types of vehicles, replacing worn-out suspension parts or aging headlights is normal. In fact, EV suspensions might actually wear out more quickly due to the battery’s weight.

The post Maintenance Differences Between Gas and Electric Cars first appeared on Diminished Value Carolina.

New EV to be Developed by Ford and Volkswagen (PDF)

It has been announced that Ford Europe will build a Volkswagen-based electric vehicle from its German factory in Cologne. It will be announced on March 21, and will be one of two Volkswagen-based SUVs manufactured by Ford. Upon closing the Fiesta production line at Ford’s Cologne plant in July, it will be completely converted to producing only fully electric vehicles.

The name hasn’t been revealed, but Martin Sander, Ford’s e-business director across the pond, included the hashtag #ExploringReinvented, leading some to speculate it has something to do with the Explorer. It makes sense, given that there is currently a hybrid version but not a fully electric model.

Ford is working to connect its American roots with Europe through styling and marketing. They want to use their SUV and pickup models in the United States to show that they can deliver the same quality as European passenger cars.

VW’s ID.4 platform is likely to provide the new crossover with a range of about 310 miles – which is impressive for today’s electric cars. VW’s ID.5 platform will be used for the second EV. The brand’s focus is on SUVs, crossovers, and trucks – which are its bread and butter – rather than smaller cars that don’t sell well.

However, an increase in Electric Vehicle production and a decline in internal combustion engine-powered vehicles means an inevitable cut in Ford Europe’s workforce. According to Ford, there will need to be 3,800 job cuts in administration and product development to keep deliveries on schedule. EVs will have a much lower workload since there is less work to be done on drivetrains.

The automaker Ford Europe plans to have an all-electric lineup by 2030, as well as all commercial vans and trucks that are plug-in hybrids or all-electric by the same date.

The post New EV to be Developed by Ford and Volkswagen first appeared on Diminished Value Carolina.
