<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A report published last week by Shell&#8217;s chair said it would not set targets to reduce emissions from customers&#8217; use of its products in absolute terms.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">End-user emissions (also called Scope 3) account for almost 95% of Shell&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions. In view of this, several investors asked Shell to set targets to reduce them in absolute terms in the medium term. Shell, however, stated that the Board found that this would be detrimental to shareholders&#8217; financial interests, as well as not contributing significantly to mitigating global warming.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shell said these targets, if enforced, would hurt its sales of oil products and natural gas, forcing its customers to switch to competitors&#8217; products.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After Shell&#8217;s new chief executive, Wael Sawan, signaled this month that the company was reviewing plans to gradually reduce oil output, the company rejected the tougher emission reduction targets. The activists of Follow This group have filed a resolution asking Shell to set 2030 emissions reduction goals consistent with the 2015 Paris climate accord. Shareholders will vote on this resolution on May 23.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shell&#8217;s board has yet to officially comment on the matter but has already recommended that investors vote against similar resolutions. In last year&#8217;s vote, 20% of shareholders supported the resolution, while Shell&#8217;s energy transition strategy was approved by 80% of them.</span></p>
<h2><b>Shell Cuts Emissions Intensity</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shell has set ambitious targets to decrease its carbon footprint by cutting planet-warming gases in its line &#8211; based on fuel quality &#8211; by 2030 and, by 2050, achieve neutrality of these emissions. As of 2016, it has also committed to reducing emissions by 50% by its absolute operations by 2030 and has already recorded a 30% reduction.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While measuring emissions by intensity could technically allow for an increase in fossil fuel output and overall emissions, Shell has committed to offsetting these increases by incorporating renewable energy and biofuels into its product mix.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite these, Shell has faced legal challenges. In 2021, a Dutch court ordered the company to reduce its emissions by 45% by 2030, a decision that Shell has appealed. Additionally, a group of European institutional investors is supporting a London lawsuit targeting Shell&#8217;s board over allegations of climate mismanagement. The outcome of this case could have significant implications on how companies approach emissions reduction.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In response to the lawsuit, Shell has maintained that its directors have acted in the best interests of the company and complied with their legal duties.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Scientists have emphasized the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, if an EV needs to be repaired, it could take much longer. Their batteries are also complex, and replacing them might be costly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Keeping an electric vehicle on the road differs from driving a gas-powered vehicle in the following ways:</span></p>
<h3><b>Maintenance Costs</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over the course of five years, EVs require less maintenance, with an average cost of $4,246 compared to $4,583 for gas-powered cars, according to a Kelley Blue Book assessment.</span></p>
<h3><b>Car Fluids</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A gas-powered vehicle&#8217;s engine oil and oil filter should be changed every few thousand miles, according to automakers. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, do not have engine oil since they are powered by electric motors, so you don&#8217;t need to worry about changing it. They also have fewer moving parts than regular cars.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Besides engine oil, there are plenty of other fluids in traditional internal combustion engines to monitor. EVs are essentially fluid-free, but they have some nuances. For example, Tesla&#8217;s transmission has a more simple design that requires infrequent filter changes. Door hinges still need to be lubricated, and brake and window washer fluids are also still needed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As EVs only require electricity, owners don&#8217;t need to worry about fuel additives, and compounds added to gas tanks to clean engine parts.</span></p>
<h3><b>Technology</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The EV is leading the charge as vehicles become more electronic and technologically advanced. With EVs, software updates and infotainment updates are handled via over-the-air upgrades, though automakers are still figuring out how to do that. They&#8217;re essentially computers on wheels.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tesla can unlock additional performance from an owner&#8217;s vehicle via over-the-air software updates. Polestar and Audi have also explored this concept. EV owners usually pay for performance upgrades.</span></p>
<h3><b>Battery Maintenance</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric cars have a potentially higher cost for battery replacement. While it&#8217;s still early days for the EV transition and regular battery replacements can be expensive (some estimates suggest as much as $15,000), new EV drivers needn&#8217;t worry because of this.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In general, EV battery replacements are referred to once an older electric car enters the used market. Therefore, the battery&#8217;s health and state of charge are important metrics to determine if a second or third owner should expect a costly battery replacement.</span></p>
<h3><b>Breaks</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">EVs benefit from regenerative braking, which means the pads and rotors need to be changed less often while, typically, owners of gasoline-powered cars change their pads and rotors every 20,000 to 50,000 miles.</span></p>
<h3><b>Repair Cost</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">EV repairs may require unique tools and equipment, electronics such as sensors can be expensive, and there are fewer technicians specializing in EV repair right now. Kelley Blue Book estimates that over the course of five years, electric vehicles will incur repair costs of approximately $1,712, up from $1,695 for gas-powered vehicles.</span></p>
<h3><b>Similarities</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For both types of vehicles, replacing worn-out suspension parts or aging headlights is normal. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It has been announced that Ford Europe will build a Volkswagen-based electric vehicle from its German factory in Cologne. It will be announced on March 21, and will be one of two Volkswagen-based SUVs manufactured by Ford. Upon closing the Fiesta production line at Ford&#8217;s Cologne plant in July, it will be completely converted to producing only fully electric vehicles.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The name hasn&#8217;t been revealed, but Martin Sander, Ford&#8217;s e-business director across the pond, included the hashtag #ExploringReinvented, leading some to speculate it has something to do with the Explorer. It makes sense, given that there is currently a hybrid version but not a fully electric model.</span></p>

<p>Ford is working to connect its American roots with Europe through styling and marketing. They want to use their SUV and pickup models in the United States to show that they can deliver the same quality as European passenger cars.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">VW&#8217;s ID.4 platform is likely to provide the new crossover with a range of about 310 miles &#8211; which is impressive for today&#8217;s electric cars. VW&#8217;s ID.5 platform will be used for the second EV. The brand&#8217;s focus is on SUVs, crossovers, and trucks – which are its bread and butter &#8211; rather than smaller cars that don&#8217;t sell well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, an increase in Electric Vehicle production and a decline in internal combustion engine-powered vehicles means an inevitable cut in Ford Europe&#8217;s workforce. According to Ford, there will need to be 3,800 job cuts in administration and product development to keep deliveries on schedule. EVs will have a much lower workload since there is less work to be done on drivetrains.</span></p>

Furthermore, despite overall vehicle registrations decreasing 11% in 2022, there were an impressive 756,534 new EV registrations that year; a 57% growth from the preceding one!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The number of battery-electric vehicles registered in the U.S. has increased from 3.1% in 2021 to 5.6%. Tesla&#8217;s market share remains unsurpassed by legacy automakers, despite their commitment to more EVs. Of the 756,534 registered electric vehicles, Tesla owned 484,351 of them. The numbers clearly indicate that other automakers are having difficulty competing with Tesla, despite the drop from 71% in 2021.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In terms of electric vehicle sales, Ford holds 7.5% of the market share, followed by Chevrolet with 4.8%, Kia with 3.8%, and Hyundai with 3.5%. Audi has also a good share of the EV market, with 2.1%. With 228,312 new registrations in 2022, the Tesla Model Y is the best-selling EV in America. Tesla has four of the top five selling electric cars, with the Model 3, S, and X joining the Y and Ford&#8217;s Mustang Mach-E rounding out the list.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The F-150 Lightning has been a successful EV launch, but production is struggling to meet the level of demand. Many brands are getting their own EVs ready to go, though none of them can hold a candle to Tesla yet. The F-150 Lightning&#8217;s new registrations stand at 12,804 while the BMW iX registered 5,245, Audi Q4 e-tron 2,758, Toyota bZ4X 1,067, and Cadillac Lyriq only 157. However, Tesla is an established leader in EV manufacturing with a U.S. capacity of around 900,000 vehicles annually.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The majority of EVs saw new-vehicle registration gains in 2022, including the Volkswagen ID4, the Rivian R1T, and the Chevrolet Bolt. Unfortunately, sales for the Porsche Taycan and the Nissan Leaf declined that year possibly due to aging models or cost. Furthermore, a few automakers experienced issues with their EVs such as Ford recalling 50,000 units of its electric Mustang Mach-E and Toyota&#8217;s bZ4X battery pack malfunctioning. As a result, car buyers may be inclined to explore other brands.</span></p>
